Acoustic Research ARRU449 Universal Smart Remote Control
Price: $93.95
(21 customer reviews)
5 used & new available from $54.99
NOTE: Acoustic Research has gone out of business and some of the more advanced features of their remotes will no longer work. As of now I do NOT recommend purchasing of any AR remotes and would recommend an equivalent such as the Logitech Harmony 650 instead.

Logitech Harmony 700 Rechargeable Advanced Remote with Color Screen

If your looking for a inexpensive “modern” universal remote control, the Harmony 700 is a good start. It supports over 200,000 devices and is easy to setup using your computer (No More Annoying Device Codes!!!). The screen supports 4 custom buttons so you can easily get to your favorite devices without hassle. The remote comes with a rechargeable battery which will last about a week but if your like me and forget to charge it you’ll have to wait, unless you have a spare set of AA and a NiMH AA charger, also it doesn’t come with a cradle so it won’t look super spiffy while it charges (we’ll deal). All-in-all the battery is not bad and not having to buy them is always a plus.
The remote is a little heavy but it is mainly the batteries and the bottom of the remote, despite this it has a good feel to it. The buttons sadly feel kinda cheap and remind me of the remote that comes with my tv but they are not bad. Again if your looking to get your feet wet in the world of “smart” remotes the Harmony 700 is a great start and is more affordable at $82.00. It will greatly simplify your life… well as far as Audio/Video goes.
Logitech Harmony 900 Rechargeable Remote with Color Touch Screen
Price: $254.99

As with almost any of Logitech universal TV remote the Harmony 900 works with several hundred thousand electronic devices. Programming this guy is a breeze; just hook it up to your computer and a simple software program walks you through the entire programming process using their database of electronic device codes so that you don’t have to page through manuals and tear your hair out.
It works with both Windows and Mac OS X computers according to the manufacturer but beware of the many glitches to be found in the Mac version of the software. If you’re a Mac user consider one of Logitech’s more Mac-compatible products or better yet go with another brand.
Another great feature of the Logitech Harmony 900 universal TV remote is that it uses radio frequency instead of infared so there’s no more issues with having to have a direct line of sight to your electronics which you’re controlling.

URC WR7 Universal Remote Control for up to 7 A/V Components with 4 Favorite Channel Buttons
Price: $20.06
(326 customer reviews)
65 used & new available from $18.66
The URC-WR7 brings a lot to the table (or couch in this situation) for a low price. My favorite feature is the “Couch Mode” which shuts off the power to the remote if it’s not been used in the last 30 seconds. This feature alone will save you tons of money in batteries over the life of the remote. Another key feature is the the macros which allows you to control how you turn on your devices via the remote.
Most people think programming universal TV remotes has to be a nightmare but the URC-WR7 from Universal lets you “teach” it by pointing the old remote at it while you press buttons. No more reading manuals, hassling your techie friend, or relying on your teenager; anyone can program this remote themselves.

If you’re like me and horde gadgets you’re probably sick of the clutter and hassle of having a ton of different remote controls for all of your equipment and you wish you have universal TV remotes to solve the issue. Today’s high-end audio visual equipment can be configured touse a universal remote control so that you can control an entire room full of gear with just one handheld device.
The most impressive type of universal TV remote available these days is the large rectangular type that resembles a tablet and has a large touchscreen. These can turn your arm chair into a veritable A/V command center where you can control lighting, sound, video, input devices, and even the climate control all from one controller. These tablet-sized remotes can cost several hundred dollars but are fully programmable and some can even run custom programs on them to expand their functionality.
There are so many different devices and so many different ways that one might wish to control their behavior that no one remote control is going to be able to solve all of your problems but you should be able to find a universal TV remote that will fit the majority of your needs. It’s simply a matter of making sure that the remote you choose to buy supports the devices that you have and the features that you need.
